Enjoy stargazing at Hoghton Tower on Sunday 11th November for an exclusive astronomical event.
A lecture will be given in our beautiful Banqueting Hall from Professor Donald Kurtz, a senior lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, who specialises in Asteroseismology.
An experienced public speaker who has done talks in all four corners of the world, he has enjoyed a long career in the field of Astronomy and has travelled to some of the world’s greatest astronomical hotspots.
The Tower’s Vaio Tea Room and Bar will be open from 5pm on the night for you to purchase snacks and refreshments and the lecture will begin at 6pm prompt so we advise all visitors to take their seats as early as possible.
**There will be no seating allocation for this event so it is first come first served**
The lecture will take place for approximately one hour, after which visitors will get the chance to go back into the Tea Room or The King’s Hall Bar to purchase snacks and refreshments.
At this time, visitors will be encouraged to take a walk outside into our Wilderness Gardens where they can do some stargazing with telescopes brought from the Alston Observatory team which is run by the University of Central Lancashire.
Even if the weather is not on favourable, don’t worry! Visitors will have the chance to enter the Stellarium which will be set up in the Wilderness Gardens, where they will be able to see the night sky on a domed screen.
In addition, there will be an exhibition taking place in the Smoking Room by the Preston & District Astronomical Society, featuring a meteorite!
Please feel free to bring your own telescopes and astrophotography equipment along for your own personal use in the outdoor stargazing segment of the event.
Please be aware that the site closes at 10:30pm to all visitors.
This event has been made possible as part of the wider Hoghton Tower – UCLan Initiative and by the cooperation of its faculty in the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute.
