The Chorley And Leyland Group Of The MS Society Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary
Written by Sam Martin on 08/08/2018
The Chorley and Leyland MS Group will be hosting a ‘come and have a go’ orienteering day at Worden Park, Sunday 2nd September. The South Ribble Orienteering Club has organised the day with all proceeds raised going towards the branch. To date, they raised over £3000 and the target is £4000!
This year, 2018, the Chorley and Leyland MS Group will celebrate its 40th year since it was formed in October 1978. The Group was founded to address the needs of people with MS who live locally, their family and friends who themselves often become carers as a result. During this summer it will be hosting a series of fundraising events as it continues to offer services to local people affected by multiple sclerosis.
The Group provides social activities, meals out, cinema visits and get-togethers. It offers a home visiting service for physiotherapy, podiatry, refexlology and reike. The Group meets at various venues for hydrotherapy, pilates and seated exercise classes. For those requiring more personal support it offers a confidential talking therapy service. For those in need of help towards funding for adaptations, respite care or specialist holidays the group tries to assist dependent upon resources. Part of our mission is to reduce the effect of social isolation that come with disability associated with MS.
Kevin, a new member of the Group said,
“Because of my MS I had to retire from work. I was devastated and lost the ability to carry out day to day tasks. Since I joined the group I’ve been surprised how my confidence has returned. Meeting with others similar to myself has helped me so much with my own wellbeing. Everyone made me feel welcome and there are many different activities and lots of support. I would highly recommend anyone with MS to contact the Group.”
Over the summer period Group members will be at The Leyland festival on 16th June, The Adlington carnival on 7th and 8th July and the Chorley Flower Show on 28th and 29th to be on hand to explain and raise awareness of the condition. The Group will also be holding store collections on 6th July at Tesco Buckshaw Village and Morrisons Chorley on the 12th September. The anniversary year will culminate with a 40th Birthday party at the Leyland Hotel on 6th October
Marion Riley, a member of the Chorley and Leyland Group Coordinating team says,
“Many of our members will be undertaking their own personal challenges to fund the ongoing voluntary work of the group. Without support from the local community we would be unable to offer the range of social and health related activities that are vital for people facing life with multiple sclerosis.”
