Lancashire's Children's Centres are proudly showing off what makes them special in a national celebration week in September.
Sure Start Children’s Centre Week is being celebrated across the country from Monday 14 September 2009 to promote the wide range of support available to families in their local children's centre.
Lancashire now has more than 60 children's centres up and running, and a further 18 are currently being set up to complete the provision for the county.
Services provided include early education and childcare, family support, child and family health services, help with job hunting and information on all aspects of bringing up a family.
In addition, centres o ffer a wide range of sessions such as baby massage, healthy eating, smoke-free homes, breastfeeding support, children’s mental health services and parenting days – in fact almost anything depending on demand.
County Councillor Pat Case, cabinet member for children and schools, said: "Our children's centres certainly have plenty to celebrate and I am proud that Lancashire is at the forefront of developing these versatile and much-needed local services for families.
"There is a host of events being held during the week and I would encourage parents who are yet to discover what a difference their local centre can make to their lives to pop in and have a chat about what’s on offer.”
Events include teddy bears' picnics, a jazz band, family photographs, balloon races, information sessions and a garden party.
The Children’s Centre Initiative is a nationwide programme that aims to translate the governments Every Child Matters agenda – for children to be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, have economic wellbeing and make a positive contribution – into reality for families with under-fives.
Children’s Centres are delivered by the county council in partnership with a range of other agencies including health trusts, Jobcentre Plus, and the voluntary sector.
